Just signed up for a 10-site hosting package. I've decided to get back into web design. My own site needs a new host, as does Gav's and a site I did for a friend. Gav's also lined me up to do a couple of sites for his LARP group, so it should be fun :D

Decided to get a new piercing next week. After much indecision and deliberation, I've decided to get the bridge of my nose done. It's one I've always liked the look of and it's only £5 more than the regular eyebrow piercing, so why the hell not.

I really miss having piercings, eventually I plan to get my eyebrows done at both ends, plus a few round my mouth and maybe some microdermals down my sternum. But the bridge is one I've wanted for years, I was just waiting to find a studio I trusted.

In other news, I kicked ass with my magic the gathering sliver deck last night. Got some more booster packs, including a couple from the new set Theros, and I'm gonna start working on a populate deck. Or perhaps a vigilance one. That'll piss people off!

The changing face of SEO

00:10 Sep 26 2013
Times Read: 449

A huge part of my job, which I've been doing at various levels for 5 years now, is about to change. And I'm actually quite excited, though my first instinct was 'ohhhh shiiiiit!'

Up to now, SEO has largely been about looking what keywords are bringing traffic into your website from search engines. The main search engine is Google, which has a 60% market share compared to Bing with 17% and Yahoo with 11%.

Since October 2011 Google had gradually been obscuring the keywords which come into a website by redirecting certain users to a secure search, or SSL, encrypted engine, which uses the protocol HTTPS instead of the regular HTTP. USers won't really notice the difference, and it only happened if someone was searching while signed into their Google account. Then they started applying this SSL redirect to anyone using the Chrome browser's Omnibox. As a result, SEOs and anyone else who tracked their website's traffic saw an increase in 'keyword not provided' data coming through for their natural search.

Yesterday, news broke that Google plans to make ALL searches going through their engine HTTPS, which means that keyword monitoring as we know it will be impossible. It's time to get creative! The team I manage are kind of panicking about it but I actually see it as a positive step - I hate looking at rows upon rows of keyword data, trying to decide which permutations to target based on this metric or that metric. Now, I'll be able to devise a strategy which looks at the customer journey as a whole, which is what SEO should REALLY be able. Hell, maybe we should start calling it CJO - Customer Journey Optimisation.

Or Cujos. Yeah, I could call myself a Cujo. Woof.

Having some friends round tonight for some geekery. Will probably play some Magic the Gathering, then work our way through my board game collection. That, or we'll end up playing Magic all night like last time. I've got a nice new Sliver deck I want to try out, but it'll need some refining before it's ready as I've had some new cards since I built it. Or I could just build a new deck...That reminds me, I need to put MTG Deck Builder back on my Chrome apps...

My Former Life...

Just found this in an old private journal entry. No idea why I kept it but I must have had a reason at the time. Anyway, it's a bit of nostalgia from my previous incarnation on VR. Not sure why it lists my affiliation as House Eternal while displaying the mark and rep from my old coven, Orbis Angui...unless I photoshopped it during creation to see what it looked like. Yep, that must be it. Still, nice bit of reminiscence.

I've decided to open up my mentorship at last. No idea if I'll get anyone interested in joining, but I'm hoping I do. It'll be a surrogate coven until such time as I hit Sire, if I decide to leave Eternal when I do that is.

But it's become one through the evolution of the English language. It's in most dictionaries these days.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/irregardless

ir·re·gard·less adverb \ˌir-i-ˈgärd-ləs\

Definition of IRREGARDLESS

nonstandard

: regardless

Usage Discussion of IRREGARDLESS

Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that “there is no such word.” There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead.

Examples of IRREGARDLESS

I told them that irregardless of what you read in books, they's some members of the theatrical profession that occasionally visits the place where they sleep. —Ring Lardner, The Big Town, 1921

Origin of IRREGARDLESS

probably blend of irrespective and regardless

First Known Use: circa 1912

Just because it is in a few dictionaries, doesn't make it a legitimate word.

If you look, bull shit internet words are now in dictionaries. Words like; selfies, irc, TLDR.

It's all amounts of retarded, because 2 of the 3 above mentiones are actually initialisms and not even fucking words.

"Ir" is a negative prefix, attatched to a word that is also a negative, making it a double fucking negative! Irregardless is like saying "without without regard"

So please, don't go quoting bullshit articals and dictionary entries without using your brain first. Please... Think of the fucking children...

I suppose people a couple hundred years ago or more would have said that about a ton of words we all use today without thinking they were words back then.

We all have our pet peeves, but... yikes dude.

In the world of VR it is Cancer who calls the shots. It is his decision who to make an admin and implement any changes he wishes on his site. This reminds me of when people complain about forced induction - the very concept of democracy doesn't fit with the vampiric legend. Vampires in the stories don't get to pick their masters, and likewise on VR we rank and file don't get to either.

I suggest that if you don't like what the admins say or do, then ignore their journal entries, don't look at their profiles, pretend as far as possible that they don't exist. You don't NEED to interact with them, and by doing so you're running the risk of coming across as a drama queen. This site has enough of them, don't add to it.

We choose to be on this site, and therefore we agreed to the TOS. The admins are enforcers of the TOS we agreed to when we signed up. If you don't agree with them, you're free to leave the site at any time.

I've never encountered a member that hated admins that wasn't doing *something* wrong- or at least encouraging someone else that was.

I hate second-guessing myself every time I go to say or type something. But I find myself having to do it all the damn time. I need to remember that just because I know the meaning of my words, not everyone else will take the same meaning from them.

And in case anyone thinks this is about them; let me assure you it's not. It's an offline issue that I'm choosing to vocalise in an online manner.

Right, it's almost midnight here in the UK and my work alarm will be rudely awakening me in 5 1/2 hours, so it's beddy byes for the Angel. Night all :)

I love VR but...I do wish the message center was more user-friendly. Like, when you've got several conversations going on, it'd be easier to have one thread for each person so you can select their username and see a single message thread, rather than have a separate message with all past replies each time. Makes finding a past message or conversation rather hard!

Just created a group over on PowerPunks called World of Darkness. It's for anyone who plays or GMs the White Wolf RPGs using the World of Darkness core game. Head on over and take a look, it's open membership and you'll be very welcome!

I'm writing my own RPG based on WoD so I decided to set the group up to discuss ideas and things with others, maybe even set up an online playtest.

Can't turn work brain off...

Am I sad? I got bored and decided to input all the formulas for status levelling into Excel and create a progress tracker, despite the fact that the site does it anyway. I've been working on Excel all day at work and what do I do when I come home? Hmph.

But at least I'm not going through the site making an organic optimisation report. Now that would be sad.

...maybe I'll do that tomorrow night...

Mutterings

Been baking cakes all night for the little'un. It was her 4th birthday last month and she was n't at school so on Weds when she goes back they're going to have a party for her. Gav and I have just spent far too much on goodie bags for the kids, and I've just taken the last cake out of the oven. It's bloody hot in that kitchen now!

Been thinking about taking the acolyte test. I used to hold a position as Acolyte a few years ago and enjoyed it, so once I've familiarised myself with the new updates I might give it another go.

Also need to get going on my mentorship. I have an idea of the graphics I want to use, so it's just a case of making them in Photoshop and getting it all coded. It's a bit bland at the moment! Need something that looks good so I can hopefully start attracting 'pupils'.

Douches, douches everywhere

14:34 Sep 08 2013

Nice to see that the douchenozzles are still present on VR! RoseBloom and FelineFatale (could be one and the same person judging by their activity and profiles) saw fit to block me despite my never having spoke to them or even viewed their profiles. They also rated me a 1 but I'm guessing that's just because they assume I actually care about sort of thing. Not that I care overmuch about the blocking either, I just don't get the mentality of people who use the blocking feature like this.

As far as I'm concerned, blocking is there to be used against people who harass, threaten or otherwise cause a nuisance to you, and that is how I shall use it.

But I guess it's nice to think I could be so much of a threat to them that they feel they have to take a pre-emptive strike! That or they hate me cos I'm pretty :P

(last sentence was very much tongue in cheek by the way *grins*)

If you can build a rhyme

A Poet you may not be

A Poem is always made of three

The length of speech or rather time

The cascade of syllables in your stanza

and of course an artist`s daring touch

Though poetic slanderers do not amount to much

Wits in poetry are rare

Most witty poets are much like a chair

Which sits and pretty seems to naked eyes

But with strong enough glasses

Feel no surprise

If your Poet will not a rhyme remember

Nor pen to parchment put and slender

Verses produce upon a swooning page

As pigeons pulled out of the hat of a mage

New mentorship

So after some deliberation, I settled on a name for my mentorship: Vashta Nerdara. IT's a play on the Vashta Nerada, which are carnivorous beings which consume flesh to the bone. They appear in an episode of Doctor Who which takes place in the biggest library in the multiverse.

Vashta is a place for geeks and bibliophiles. I haven't styled it yet but I'll get around to it soon. In the meantime, if you'd like to join, drop me a message.

My Friday Night

Downloaded a trial version of Duels of the Planeswalkers (Magic the Gathering) on Steam. Got my ass handed to me by Chandra, the FIRST damn level. Oh well. Had a bad hand and haven't figured out how to mulligan on there yet! Think I'll have to buy the full version so I can build a deck that works for me. Annoying thing is, when I played the mobile version I beat her easily and got her deck. Shame the progress doesn't save on the trial.

Thinking of starting up a Mentorship. Not sure what to call it yet, but I've got a clear concept. Not sharing it here yet - don't want anyone stealing the idea! But it should be good; watch this space.
